Save Your Ass with Complete Testing

by Rocky Fu on February 17, 2009

Half an hour ago, I almost purchased two tickets to Haikou city (Hainan Province, China) on Tigerairways.com. I was quite eager to get away this Friday with my girlfriend and pretty happy with a short travel at cost of SGD 540 air fare. Only after I selected dates and destination, found out the price, and clicked for further steps, I encountered this error:

Secure Connection Failed
www.tigerairways.com uses an invalid security certificate.
The certificate is only valid for a248.e.akamai.net
(Error code: ssl_error_bad_cert_domain)

I tried a few times and never had any luck. I suddenly realized that it may be due to a browser problem with Firefox, and I was right after I found it working on IE browser. I didn’t buy the tickets as tons of work finally crashed my excitement.

How many users would help you test different browsers compatibility? Few. For budget airlines, every dollar counts. And, this is not the first time it happens. No one can avoid making mistakes; but most mistakes can be eliminated by complete testing. Test from the landing page all the way through to the end of transactions (the thank-you page). Often it’s a tedious process; but it saves your ass!

Bonus tip: make sure your site has site monitoring mechanism ready so that you can be alerted of site problems especially like server down in time.
