Is It Worth It to Buy A One Million Domain?

by Rocky Fu on September 13, 2007

I came across a piece of domain purchase news from TechTarget China. China’s biggest driver website driverchina.com bought qudong.com (“qudong” is the Chinese Pinyin form for “driver”) at a price of 1 million Chinese yuan (about US$130,000).

DriverChina.com is quite popular in China, which has a traffic rank of “2,148″ in Alexa. The main reason to buy qudong.com is to have a shorter and more memorable name for Chinese Internet users.

A solid reason. But, I rather put 1 million into the website optimization and development. If I want to sell notebook online, I don’t necessarily need a domain like “notebook.com”. Let creativity solve the problem.
